Over the last 10 years anaerobic digestion (AD) plants have been built on farms across the UK to process agricultural and industrial organic feedstocks to produce biogas and generate renewable energy. These plants are reliable, efficient and flexible, capable of processing a wide variety of different feedstock inputs. This AD technology allows conversion of organic waste into green energy, turning a possible disposal cost into farm revenue and developing a sustainable business. AD plants export both electricity and bio-methane to grid, so making the most of turning waste into renewable energy.
However, these farm AD Plants have PCs and other devices that need to be connected to the Internet to allow control, monitoring and technical support to maintain a fully 24/7 operational status. At RuralTech, we can help the on-farm operating team and third party technical management to have 24-hour monitoring access by making sure the broadband connectivity, PC operations, data backup and cyber security are fully supported.
Microsoft stopped providing security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7 on 14th January 2020 and as a result, we are advising all our AD Plant clients to upgrade to Windows 10 to ensure the plants remain fully operational and are not exposed to any security risks and viruses.
Each upgrade typically involves one or two days on site. A new customised Dell Optiplex PC running the latest version of Windows 10 Pro with a core i5 Processor is required, along with a large hard drive to run the FactoryTalk software vital for each plant's operation.
Once on site, the PC is installed in a secure data cabinet, complete with business-grade anti-virus software, specialist remote support software and local and Cloud data backup.
Also, if required, the upgrade includes the installation of a new business-grade DrayTek 2862 Router with the latest firmware to maximise broadband connectivity. This has a bespoke configuration, both for cyber security and to allow remote access for third party support.
